PhilosopherLudwigWittgensteinhadanenormousinfluenceontwentieth-centuryphilosophyeventhoughonlyoneofhisworks,thefamousTractatusLogico-Philosophicus,waspublishedinhislifetime.BeyondthispublicationtheimpactofhisthoughtwasmainlyconveyedtoasmallcircleofstudentsthroughhislecturesatCambridgeUniversity.Fortunately,manyofhisideashavesurvivedinboththedictationsthatweresubsequentlypublished,andthenotestakenbyhisstudents,amongthemAliceAmbroseandthelateMargaretMacdonald,from1932to1935.Thesenotes,noweditedbyProfessorAmbrose,areherepublished,andtheyshedmuchlightonWittgenstein'sphilosophicaldevelopment.Amongthetopicsconsideredarethemeaningofawordanditsrelationtocommonusage,rulesofgrammarandtheirrelationtofact,thegrammaroffirstpersonstatements,languagegames,andthenatureofphilosophy.ThisvolumeisindispensabletoanyseriousdiscussionofWittgenstein'swork.
