EdwardHetzelSchafer(薛愛華;23August1913–9February1991)wasanAmericansinologistandanotedexpertontheTangdynasty.Schafer'smostfamousworksincludeTheGoldenPeachesofSamarkandandTheVermilionBird,whichbothexploreChina'sinteractionswithnewculturesandregionsduringtheTangdynasty.SchaferearnedaPhDfromtheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeleyin1947.HethenbecameaprofessorofChinesethereandremainedatBerkeleyuntilhisretirementin1984.From1955to1968SchaferservedasEastAsiaEditoroftheJournaloftheAmericanOrientalSociety,andfrom1969to1984heheldtheAgassizProfessorshipofOrientalLanguagesandLiteratureatBerkeley.HeisalsoknownwithinsinologyforhisuncompromisingbeliefintheimportanceoflanguageskillsandlearningandhisdifferingapproachonthissubjecttoJohnKingFairbank.Hispublicationsincludeover100scholarlyarticlesandmorethanadozenbooks.SchaferdiedinCaliforniain1991.
