PatrickLeighFermor(1915-2011)wasanintrepidtraveler,aheroicsoldier,andawriterwithauniqueprosestyle.Afterhisstormyschooldays,followedbythewalkacrossEuropetoConstantinoplethatbeginsinATimeofGifts(1977)andcontinuesthroughBetweentheWoodsandtheWater(1986),helivedandtraveledintheBalkansandtheGreekArchipelago.HisbooksMani(1958)andRoumeli(1966)attesttohisdeepinterestinlanguagesandremoteplaces.IntheSecondWorldWarhejoinedtheIrishGuards,becamealiaisonofficerinAlbania,andfoughtinGreeceandCrete.HewasawardedtheDSOandOBE.HelivedpartlyinGreece—inthehousehedesignedwithhiswife,Joan,inanolivegroveintheMani—andpartlyinWorcestershire.Hewasknightedin2004forhisservicestoliteratureandtoBritish–Greekrelations.JoshuaJelly-SchapiroisadoctoralstudentingeographyattheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley.HehaswrittenforTheGuardian,TheBeliever,TheNation,ForeignPolicy,andTheNewYorkReviewofBooks,amongotherpublications.
