ThestoryofOlmstedwhodesignedsomeofNorthAmerica’smostfamouspublicspacesWhenthegreatcitiesofNorthAmericawerebeingbuilt,littlethoughtwasgiventotheideaofcreating“greenspaces.”Buttheseoasesfromthedirt,gravel,andnoiseofthecrowdedcitystreetswereexactlywhatwereneeded.OneofthefewpeopletorecognizethisfactwasFrederickLawOlmsted,NorthAmerica’sfirstlandscapearchitect.CombininghisloveofnaturewithhisadmirationforthestructuredbeautyfoundinthegreatpublicparksofLondonandParis,Olmstedturnedneglected,swampyacresontheedgeofNewYorkCityintooneofthemostacclaimedparksintheworld:CentralPark.ButOlmsted’ssuccesswasnotearnedovernight.Hespentmanyyearswanderingfromjobtojob,searchingfortheperfectcareer.Andwhenhefinallydiscoveredhispassion,fewpeoplewereconfidentinhisabilities.ButOlmstedfoughtforthepreservationofareaslikeYosemiteintheUSA,andhisperseverancewouldberewarded:hewentontodesignsomeofthemostfamouspublicspacesinNorthAmerica.
