JacobBurckhardt(1818-1897)intendedtojointheChurch,butlosthisfaithwhilestudyingtheology.ThereafterhestudiedhistoryattheUniversityofBasel,gaininghisdoctoratein1843andbecomingalecturer.HemovedtotheZurichPolytechnicasProfessorofArchitectureandHistoryin1855,whichiswherehewroteTheCivilizationoftheRenaissanceinItaly.In1858hereturnedtoBasel,wherehelivedforhisworkasateacherattheUniversity.PeterBurkeisReaderinCulturalHistory,UniversityofCambridge,andFellowofEmmanuelCollege.HehaspublishedwidelyontheRenaissanceandculturalhistory.PeterMurraywasEmeritusProfessoroftheHistoryofArtattheUniversityofLondon.HetaughtattheCourtauldInstitutefrom1949-1967andwassubsequentlychairofArtHistoryatBirkbeckCollege.HepublishedwidelyonthearchitectureoftheRenaissance.Hediedin1992.
