ThefirstmonographconceivedfortheinternationalmarketdevotedtooneofthemostimportantChinesecontemporaryartists.WangGuangyiisconsideredoneoftheemblemsofnewChina,becausehisworkunderlines,throughnewexpressivelanguageforms,thedeepsocialchangesthecountryisexperiencing.Thismonographrevealsforthefirsttimetheentireoeuvreoftheartist,whoseworksareclassifiedinChinaunderthegenreofPoliticalPop,andarekeptinthecollectionsofthemostimportantmuseumsandfoundationsintheworld.BorninHeilongjiangProvincein1956,WangGuangyibecameoneofthegreatstarsofcontemporaryChineseartthroughhisGreatCriticismseries.Throughthejuxtapositionoftwodefinitelyopposingideologies,eachrepresentedthroughiconicsymbols,GuangyicriticisesCommunismandconsumerismwhilenegatingbothbycombiningthemskilfully.Stylisticallymergingthegovernment-enforcedaestheticofAgitpropwiththekitschsensibilityofAmericanPop,Guangyisworkadoptsthecold-warlanguageofthe1960stoironicallyexaminethecontemporaryissuesofglobalisation.Throughtheircritique,Guangyispaintingsweaveintricatenarratives,implyingtheroleoftheartistasanactiveparticipant(bothassubjugatorandsubservient)ineconomicandsocialpolicies.Guangyitreadsaverydelicatelinebetweenmoraldictumandcapitalistendorsement;theinterpretationofhispaintingsalternateswiththesubjectivityofcontext.Amalgamating,confusingandblurringopposingideologicalbeliefs,Guangyisbillboard-sizedcanvasesreadilyselloutnationalvalour,whilesimultaneouslydevaluingstatussymbolluxuryfortheproletariatcause.
