ROBERTWALSER(1878–1956)wasbornintoaGerman-speakingfamilyinBiel,Switzerland.Heleftschoolatfourteenandledawandering,precariousexistencewhilewritinghispoems,novels,andvastnumbersofthe“prosepieces”thatbecamehishallmark.In1933hewasconfinedtoasanatorium,whichmarkedtheendofhiswritingcareer.AmongWalser’sworksavailableinEnglishareJakobvonGunten(availableasanNYRBclassic),TheTanners,Microscripts,TheAssistant,TheRobber,MasqueradeandOtherStories,andSpeakingtotheRose:Writings,1912–1932.JOCHENGREVENistheauthoroffirstGerman-languagePhDdissertationonRobertWalserandtheeditorofWalser’scollectedworksinGerman.Asagraduatestudentinthe1950s,herecognizedthatWalser’s“microscripts”(manuscriptpagescoveredwithtinyhandwritingdiscoveredafterWalser’sdeath)werenotwritteninsecretcodebutwereinfactliterarytextsinstandardGerman.GrevenhasdevotedmorethanfiftyyearstostudyingandeditingWalser’swork.SUSANBERNOFSKYisthetranslatorofsixbooksbyRobertWalseraswellasworksbyJennyErpenbeck,YokoTawada,HermannHesse,GregorvonRezzori,andothers.ThecurrentchairofthePENTranslationCommittee,sheteachesintheMFAPrograminCreativeWritingandLiteraryTranslationatQueensCollege(CUNY)andisatworkonabiographyofWalser.
