Currentresearchonthespectraltheoryoffinitegraphsmaybeseenaspartofawiderefforttoforgecloserlinksbetweenalgebraandcombinatorics(inparticularbetweenlinearalgebraandgraphtheory).Thisbookdescribeshowthistopiccanbestrengthenedbyexploitingpropertiesoftheeigenspacesofadjacencymatricesassociatedwithagraph.Theextensionofspectraltechniquesproceedsatthreelevels:usingeigenvectorsassociatedwithanarbitrarylabellingofgraphvertices,usinggeometricalinvariantsofeigenspacessuchasgraphanglesandmainangles,andintroducingcertainkindsofcanonicaleigenvectorsbymeansofstarpartitionsandstarbases.Oneobjectiveistodescribegraphsbyalgebraicmeansasfaraspossible,andthebookdiscussestheUlamreconstructionconjectureandthegraphisomorphismprobleminthiscontext.Furtherproblemsofgraphreconstructionandidentificationareusedtoillustratetheimportanceofgraphanglesandstarpartitionsinrelationtographstructure.Specialistsingraphtheorywillwelcomethistreatmentofimportantnewresearch.
