FriedrichWilhelmNietzsche(October15,1844–August25,1900)wasanineteenth-centuryGermanphilologistandphilosopher.Hewrotecritiquesofreligion,morality,contemporaryculture,philosophy,andscience,usingadistinctiveGermanlanguagestyleanddisplayingafondnessforaphorism.Nietzsche'sinfluenceremainssubstantialwithinandbeyondphilosophy,notablyinexistentialismandpostmodernism.Hisstyle,andradicalquestioningofthevalueandobjectivityoftruth,raiseconsiderableproblemsofinterpretation,generatinganextensivesecondaryliteratureinbothcontinentalandanalyticphilosophy.Nonetheless,hiskeyideasincludeinterpretingtragedyasanaffirmationoflife,aneternalrecurrencethathasbecomesubjecttonumerousinterpretations,areversalofPlatonism,andarepudiationof(especially19th-century)Christianity.Nietzschebeganhiscareerasaphilologistbeforeturningtophilosophy.Attheageof24hebecameProfessorofClassicalPhilologyattheUniversityofBasel,butresignedin1879duetohealthproblems,whichwouldplaguehimformostofhislife.In1889heexhibitedsymptomsofaseriousmentalillness,livingouthisremainingyearsinthecareofhismotherandsisteruntilhisdeathin1900.
