HannahArendt(1906–1975)wasoneofthemostinfluentialpoliticalphilosophersofthetwentiethcentury.BornintoaGerman-Jewishfamily,shewasforcedtoleaveGermanyin1933andlivedinParisforthenexteightyears,workingforanumberofJewishrefugeeorganisations.In1941sheimmigratedtotheUnitedStatesandsoonbecamepartofalivelyintellectualcircleinNewYork.SheheldanumberofacademicpositionsatvariousAmericanuniversitiesuntilherdeathin1975.Sheisbestknownfortwoworksthathadamajorimpactbothwithinandoutsidetheacademiccommunity.Thefirst,TheOriginsofTotalitarianism,publishedin1951,wasastudyoftheNaziandStalinistregimesthatgeneratedawide-rangingdebateonthenatureandhistoricalantecedentsofthetotalitarianphenomenon.Thesecond,TheHumanCondition,publishedin1958,wasanoriginalphilosophicalstudythatinvestigatedthefundamentalcategoriesofthevitaactiva(labor,work,action).Inadditiontothesetwoimportantworks,Arendtpublishedanumberofinfluentialessaysontopicssuchasthenatureofrevolution,freedom,authority,traditionandthemodernage.Atthetimeofherdeathin1975,shehadcompletedthefirsttwovolumesofherlastmajorphilosophicalwork,TheLifeoftheMind,whichexaminedthethreefundamentalfacultiesofthevitacontemplativa(thinking,willing,judging).
