DrHamiltoncomesfromabackgroundofclinicalandacademicgeneralpractice.Hismedicalcareerbeganinhospitalmedicine,including2?yearsasaphysicianinMalawi,followedby11yearsasaprincipal(andseniorpartner)ingeneralpractice.Heisnowafull-timeprimarycareresearcher,fundedbytheNHS.Hismainresearchinterestisindiagnosisinprimarycare,particularlythatofcancer,andherecentlycompletedthreediagnosticstudiesfortheDepartmentofHealthoncolorectal,prostateandlungcancers.Thecolorectalresultsinparticularhavebornefruit,inthatfurtherstudiesonatoolforearlierdiagnosisofthiscancerhavebeenfundedbytheDoH.DrHamiltonisafoundermemberoftheNRCIPrimaryCareStudiesDevelopmentGroup(theumbrellaorganisationforcancerstudiesinprimarycare)andtheNICEGuidelineDevelopmentGroupforCFS/ME.Hehaswrittenover50peer-reviewedpublications,largelyinthefieldofdiagnosis,withcancerbeingthelargesttopic.DrHamiltonalsoco-editedthe2ndeditionof'OrthopaedicsinPrimaryCare',whichinvolvedthekeyskilloftranslatingorthopaedicsurgeonslanguageintoEnglish!Hiswritingisnotjustthedryformatofresearchpapers:hehaswritteneditorialsfortheBMJandBJGP,lighterpiecesforthebackpagesoftheBJGPandalengthypieceonconstipationforBMJlearning!Aswellashismedicalqualificationshehasacertificateinliterature(withmerit!)fromtheUniversityofExeter.ProfessorPetersisastatisticianbybackground,withaninterestandtrackrecordinriskassessmentthatcommencedwithhisPhDinthefieldofperinatalandpaediatricepidemiologyundertakenattheUniversityofExeterabout20yearsago.Hisinterestsevolvedintoprimarycareresearchingeneral,andrandomisedtrialsinparticular(includingissuesofcancertreatmentandscreening)duringaseriesofacademicpostsfirstatCardiffand,since1992,attheUniversityofBristol.HeisamemberoftheNCRIPalliativeCareClinicalStudiesDevelopmentGroup,andisDirectoroftheNCRI-accreditedBristolRandomisedTrialsCollaboration.Hehasextensiveexperienceonregionalandnationalgrantscommittees,includingtheNHSHealthTechnologyAssessmentCommissioningBoardandtheMRCHealthServicesandPublicHealthResearchBoard.HeisamemberofthePrimaryCareandOtherCommunityBasedSubjectspanelforthe2008ResearchAssessmentExercise,isaco-editorofthejournalPaediatricandPerinatalEpidemiologyandisontheEditorialBoardoftheBritishJournalofGeneralPractice.ProfessorPetershasongoinginterestincommunicatingstatisticalmethodsandtheresultsofcomplexresearchdesignsanddataanalysestoageneralclinicalaudience.Heisanauthorofover200peer-reviewedpublications,ontwooccasionswinningtheRCGP/BootstheChemistsResearchPaperoftheYearAward.Hehasco-editedthebook'ScreeninginObstetricsandGynecology',whichhasrecentlybeenextensivelyrevisedinasecondedition.
