WashingtonIrving,oneofthefirstAmericanstoachieveinternationalrecognitionasanauthor,wasborninNewYorkCityin1783.HisAHistoryofNewYork,publishedin1809underthenameofDiedrichKnickerbocker,wasasatiricalhistoryofNewYorkthatspannedtheyearsfrom1609to1664.Underanotherpseudonym,GeoffreyCrayon,hewroteTheSketch-book,whichincludedessaysaboutEnglishfolkcustoms,essaysabouttheAmericanIndian,andthetwoAmericanstoriesforwhichheismostrenowned——"TheLegendofSleepyHollow"and"RipVanWinkle."IrvingservedasamemberoftheU.S.legationinSpainfrom1826to1829andasministertoSpainfrom1842to1846.FollowinghisreturntotheU.S.in1846,hebeganworkonafive-volumebiographyofWashingtonthatwaspublishedfrom1855-1859.WashingtonIrvingdiedin1859inNewYork.
