HewasbornandraisedinPennsylvaniawherehegraduatedfromShippensburgStateCollege(nowShippensburgUniversity).Whenhewasaseniorincollege,hewonanAtlanticMonthlyfictioncompetitionandhavebeenwritingeversince.HisfirstjobaftergraduationwaswiththeAppalachianPovertyProgram,wherehewasexpectedtocounselandtutorunderprivilegedchildrenonaone-to-onebasis.Duringhisfirstdayonthejob,hediscoveredthatthepreviousoccupierofhispositionhadbeenbeatenupbytheverykidshehadbeentryingtohelpandhadlandedinthehospitalforseveralweeks.Thefollowingyearwasfilledwithchallengebutalsotension,andhewasmorehighlymotivatedthanevertobuildacareerasawriter.hewrotenightsandweekends,whichhecontinuedtodoafterleavingthepovertyprogramandgoingtoworkasanEnglishteacherinasuburbanschooldistrictoutsideHarrisburg.Afterayearandahalfinthatposition,hiswife,Gerda,mademeanofferhecouldn'trefuse:"he'llsupportyouforfiveyears,"shesaid,"andifyoucan'tmakeitasawriterinthattime,you'llnevermakeit."Bytheendofthosefiveyears,Gerdahadquitherjobtorunthebusinessendofhiswritingcareer.Gerdaandhe,alongwithourdog,Trixie,liveinsouthernCalifornia.
