AlvinSchwartz(April25,1927,inBrooklyn,NewYork–March14,1992inPrinceton,NewJersey)wastheauthorofmorethanfiftybooksdedicatedtoanddealingwithtopicssuchasfolkloreandwordplay,manyofwhichwereintendedforyoungreaders.HeisoftenconfusedwithanotherAlvinSchwartz,whowroteSupermanandBatmandailycomicsstripsandanoveltitledTheBlowtop.Afterastintinthenavy,Schwartzbecameinterestedinwriting.HegothisbachelorsdegreesfromColbyCollegeandamastersdegreeinjournalismfromNorthwesternUniversity.HereportedforTheBinghamtonPressfrom1951to1955.Duringhisprofessionalwritingcareerhisworkhadbeenpublishedbyavarietyoffirms,includingLippincottWilliams&Wilkins,BantamBooks,andHarperCollins.AseriesofhisbooksonfolkloreforchildrenwereillustratedbyGlenRoundsandeachfeaturedatypeoffolklore:thefirst,ATwisterofTwists,aTanglerofTongues,waspublishedin1972.OthersinthisseriesincludedTomfoolery,whichfeaturedwordplay;Witcrackswhichwasaboutsmart-aleckriddlesandjokes;andCrossYourFingers,SpitinYourHat,aboutsuperstitions.Heisbestknownforthe"ScaryStoriestoTellintheDark"series,whichfeaturedgruesome,nightmarishillustrationsbyStephenGammell.TheserieswasAmerica'smostfrequentlychallengedbook(orbookseries)forlibraryinclusionof1990-2000(Source:AmericanLibraryAssociation).Someofhisotherbooks,suchasWhenIGrewUpLongAgo,wereaimedatanolderaudience,andpresentedglimpsesoflifeintheUnitedStatesduringthelate18thcenturyandtheearly19thcentury.AtthetimeofhisdeathinPrinceton,NewJersey,wherehelived,Schwartzwassurvivedbyhiswifeandfourchildren.
