ItwasperhapsnosurprisethatJacquesFerrierwaspersonallyselectedbyFrenchPresidentNicolasSarkozytodesignthecountry’spavilionfortheShanghaiWorldExpoin2010.Itwastobecome,alongwithThomasHeatherwick’s‘SeedCathedral’,oneofthemostlaudedandvisitedpavilionsofthefair,andembodiedthekeycharacteristicsofFerrier’swork:adeepinterestintechnology;theencouragementofsocialinteractionthroughtheuseofcourtyards,walkwaysandloggias;andtheuseofaperforatedouterskinthatnotonlyrespondstotheneedforinternalclimaticcontrolbutalsoprovidesanadditionalspaceforinformalsocialgatheringwhilesofteningthetransitionfromthebuilding’sinternalspacetotheoutsideworld.InfluencedbythecriticRaynerBanham,bytheworkofFrencharchitect–engineerJeanProuvé,andbyhisearlyexperienceofworkingwithNormanFoster,JacquesFerrierhasdevelopedahighlyindividualapproachtoarchitecturethatseekstoharnesstechnologyinordertocreatebuildingsandurbanenvironmentsthatfullyengagewiththepracticalandemotionalneedsofpeople.CentraltoFerrier’sphilosophyistheideaofthe‘SensualCity’,whichaimstocreatebuildingsandcitiesthatengagewiththefivesenses–sound,smell,sight,touchandtaste–thatarecentraltohumanexperience.Ferrieristheantithesisofthecelebrity‘starchitect’,buthisworkstandsoutpreciselybecauseofitscalmthoughtfulness,sensitivityandprecision.
