FyodorDostoevskywasborninMoscowon11thNovember1821.Hehadsixsiblingsandhismotherdiedin1837andhisfatherin1839.HegraduatedfromtheStPetersburgAcademyofMilitaryEngineeringin1846butdecidedtochangecareersandbecomeawriter.Hisfirstbook,PoorFolk,didverywellbuton23rdApril1849hewasarrestedforsubversionandsentencedtodeath.Afteramock-executionhissentencewascommutedtohardlabourinSiberiawherehedevelopedepilepsy.Hewasreleasedin1854.His1860book,TheHouseoftheDeadwasbasedontheseexperiences.In1857hemarriedMariaDmitrievnaIsaeva.Afterhisreleaseheadoptedmoreconservativeandtraditionalvaluesandrejectedhisprevioussocialistposition.Inthefollowingyearshespentalotoftimeabroad,struggledwithanaddictiontogamblingandfelldeeplyindebt.Hiswifediedin1864andhemarriedAnnaGrigoryevaSnitkina.Inthefollowingyearshepublishedhismostenduringandsuccessfulbooks,includingCrimeandPunishment(1865).Hediedon9thFebruary1881.(19990927)--ThistextreferstoanalternatePaperbackedition.
