BecausepoliticalcampaignsintheUnitedStatesareprivatelyfunded,America'spoliticalsystemisheavilybiasedtowardtheinterestsofwealthycampaigncontributors.Asaresult,governmentpolicieshavelargelyignoredthegrowthinincomeinequalitycausedbytechnologicalchangeandeconomicglobalization.ThisomissionhasbeentoleratedbecausemostAmericansdonotsupportinterventionistgovernmentpolicies.Theybelievethatthegovernmentservestheinterestsofthecampaigndonorsratherthanthepublic.Thisskepticismconcerningthepublicsector'sfairnessmustbeovercomebeforeeffectiveprogramstooffsetmountinginequalitycanbeimplemented.Thoughinrecentyearslegislationtoreformthefinancingofpoliticalcampaignshasbeenadopted,privatewealthcontinuestodominatethepoliticalprocess.Politicalcynicismthereforepersists.Avoluntarysystemofpublicfundingofcandidatesforofficeisrequiredtogeneratethetrustinthepublicsectornecessarytoreversethetrendtowardinequality.
