WalterFarley(26June1915inSyracuse,NewYork–16October1989inSarasota,Florida)wasanAmericanauthor,primarilyofhorsestoriesforchildren.EducatedatColumbia,wherehereceivedaB.A.in1941,hisfirstandmostfamousworkwasTheBlackStallion(1941).Hewrotemanysequels,andtheserieshasbeencontinuedsincehisdeathbyhissonSteven.Farley'sunclewasaprofessionalhorsemanandtaughthimvariousmethodsofhorsetrainingandabouttheadvantagesordisadvantagesofeachmethod.Mr.FarleybegantowriteTheBlackStallionwhilehewasastudentatBrooklyn'sErasmusHallHighSchoolandMercersburgAcademyinPennsylvania.Hefinisheditandhaditpublishedin1941whilestillanundergraduateatColumbiaUniversity.Farleyandhiswife,Rosemary,hadfourchildren--Pam,Alice,StevenandTim--whomtheyraisedonafarminPennsylvaniaandinabeachhouseinFlorida.In1989FarleywashonoredbyhishometownlibraryinVenice,Florida,whichestablishedtheWalterFarleyLiteraryLandmarkinitschildren'swing.FarleydiedofcancerinOctober1989,shortlybeforethepublicationofTheYoungBlackStallion,thetwenty-firstbookintheBlackStallionseriesandafterthestartofproductiononthetelevisionseriesAdventuresoftheBlackStallion.
