ThisbookexploresthedirectconnectionsandcollaborationsofGermanandRussianartistsandtheaffinitiesbetweenbothcountries'artisticdevelopment.RussianModernismmapstheRussianversionofexpressionismandputsitinthecontextofthehistoryof20thcenturyart.RussianModernismisdedicatedtotheradicalmodernistmovementsinRussianandGermanartduringtheearlyyearsofthe20thcentury.Theirdevelopmentwasparallelandoftenintertwined.ArtistssuchasVasilyKandinskyorAlexejvonJawlenskyareclaimedbytheGermansbutremainRussianartistsfortheRussians.TheBurlukbrothers,whobecamecelebritiesoftheRussianradicalartscene,participatedinthefirstexhibitionoftheBlauerReiter.RussianartiststravelledtoGermanyandlivedthere,whiletheirGermancounterpartswereawareofwhatwasshowninMoscowexhibitionhalls.Thediverseartmovement"expressionism"wasformedinGermanyatthebeginningofthe1910sandwasgiventhenamebythecriticHerwarthWalden.MembersofgroupssuchasDieBrückeandtheBlauerReiterwereinitiallyinfluencedbytheFrenchFauvesmovement,andtheirRussiancontemporariesalsotriedtofindnewartistictruthinParis,'laVilleLumière'.However,bothinGermanyandRussiathenewFrenchinfluenceunderwentradicaltransformation.Beautifullyillustratedanddesigned,thisbookprovidesaninsightintotheworkofRussianandGermanartistsintheearlyyearsofthe20thcentury.
