GertLedig(1921–1999)wasborninLeipzigandgrewupinVienna.AttheageofeighteenhevolunteeredforthearmyandwaswoundedatthebattleofLeningradin1942.HereworkedhisexperiencesduringthewarinthisnovelDieStalinorgel(1955).Sentbackhome,hetrainedasanavalengineerandwascaughtinseveralairraids.TheexperienceneverlefthimandledtothewritingofVergeltung(Payback)(1956).Thenovel’sreissueinGermanyin1999heraldedamuchpublicizedrediscoveryoftheauthor’sworkthere.MichaelHofmannisapoet.HeisthetranslatorofninebooksbyJosephRothandwasawardedthePEN/Book-of-the-MonthClubPrizefortranslatingTheStringofPearls.HeisalsothetranslatorofWolfgangKoeppen’stwonovelsTheHothouseandASadAffair.,,,,
