TheTallyofTypeswasfirstcirculatedinaprivatelyprintededitionin1953,achievingafameandinfluencewhollydisproportionatetothecomparativelysmallnumberofcopiesinexistence.In1973CambridgeUniversityPresspublishedaversioneditedandexpandedbyBrookeCrutchleyandothers,makingthisclassicoftypographicalhistoryandpracticeavailabletoawiderreadership;itisthiseditionwehavereprintedhere.StanleyMorisonprovidedtheimpetusandjudgementbehindtheprogrammeoftypographicalrevivalcarriedthroughbytheMonotypeCorporationinthe1920sandearly1930s.TheTallyisanaccount,historical,criticalandfunctional,ofthetypescutunderMorison'sdirectionduringthisperiod.Itisanimpressiveperformance:afineexampleofwhatisnowrecognisedasMorison'scharacteristicblendoferuditionandinsight.Whatstartedasnomorethananattempttorecordthefactsdeveloped,underhishand,intooneofthemajorstatementsoftypographicalpracticeofitstime.
