TheMughals-descendantsofTimurandGenghizKhanwithstrongculturaltiestothePersianworld-seizedpoliticalpowerinnorthIndiain1526andbecamethemostimportantartisticallyactiveMuslimdynastyonthesubcontinent.Inthisrichlyillustratedbook,DrMiloBeachshowshow,between1555and1630inparticular,MughalpatronageoftheartswasincessantandradicallyinnovativefortheIndiancontext.TheMughalsalsoprofoundlyalteredthecharacterofpaintingintheHinduareasofnorthIndiaoverwhichtheyruled.TheseinitiallyindependentterritoriesbelongedtoRajputs,Hindusofthewarriorcaste.TheauthorrevealshowMughalpaintingwasdefinedbythestylespopularattheimperialcourt,whereasPajputpaintingconsistedofmanylocalcourtstyles,correspondingtothevariousHindukingdoms,eachwithdifferenttastesandartisticinspirations.DeeplyrootedinIndianartistictraditions,RajputpaintingswerealsocloselyalliedtoimagerypopularwithIndianvillagersandtoworksmadefortempleusethroughoutthesubcontinent.Byreproducingnearly200examplesinthisstudy,MiloBeachtracestheinterplayofthetraditionsofMughalandRajputpaintingfromthesixteenthtonineteenthcenturies.HedemonstratesthetoleranceeachshowedtowardsoutsideinfluenceandchangeandthushelpstodefineauniquelyIndianattitudetowardsthearts.Theauthoralsoexpandshisnarrativebylisting,inanappendix,importantdatedmanuscriptsandrelatedpublications.MughalandRajputPaintingmakesamajorcontributiontothestudyofnorthIndianpainting.Thisworkwillbewidelyreadbystudentsandspecialistsofarthistory,IndianhistoryandSouthAsianstudiesaswellasbyanyoneinterestedinIndianart.
