Knownforhislarge-scalepaintings，OscarMurillo’sexpandingpractice，whichincludesperformance，sculpture，installation，andvideo，hashelpeddefinehimasoneofthemostdynamicartistsofhisgeneration.Localinhisinterestincommunityandfamily，butglobalinhisapproachtoartmaking，Murillo’screativeexplorationspresentuswithsomeofthemostpressingquestionsfacingustoday:howdocommunitiesdefinethemselves，andhowcanasingleindividual―anartist―helpfacilitatecommunicationbetweenthemandthelargerworld?Frequenciesisalong-termprojectconceivedbyMurilloincollaborationwithwriterClaraDublancandtheartist’sparents，BelisarioCaicedoandMariaVirgelinaMurillo，thatbeginstoofferanswerstothesequestionsthroughpaintinganddrawing.In2013，Murillobegansendingrawcanvastoselectedschoolsinovertwentycountriesaroundtheworld，withthesolerequirementthattheybeaffixedtodesksandillustratedbystudents.Thecanvaseswouldstaythereforaperiodoftimeandthenbere-collectedbytheartist.Withinweeksoftheirarrival，childrenfromplacesasdisparateasChinaandSloveniabegantodraw，paint，write，andcommunicate，creatingrecordsoftheirsocialandeducationalexperiences.FrequenciescataloguesthefirstyearofMurillo’sexploration，withshorttextswrittenbytheartist，Dublanc，andCaicedoalongsideintimatephotographsoftheparticipantsdocumentingtheproject’smyriadsteps.Thebooknotonlybringstogetheravastamountofmaterialnowcollectedintheeponymousarchive，withoversixhundredpagesofdetailedspreads，butisitselfanextensionoftheproject―anongoingcataloguethatchartsthecreationofartworksasacommunalandglobalendeavor.Bornin1986inLaPaila，Colombia，OscarMurilloearnedhisBFAin2007fromtheUniversityofWestminster，London，followedbyhisMFAin2012fromtheRoyalCollegeofArt，London.In2015，theartistdebutedhisFrequenciesprojectwithalarge-scaleinstallationofcanvasesaspartofthe56thVeniceBiennale.Hehashadsoloexhibitionsatprominentinstitutionsworldwide，includingtheMuseodeArtedelaUniversidadNacionaldeColombia，Bogotá(2015);SouthLondonGallery(2013);RubellFamilyCollection，Miami;andtheSerpentineGallery，London(both2012).
