KyleneBeersisanaward-winningeducatorandistheauthorofWhenKidsCan’tRead:WhatTeachersCanDo,NoticeandNote:StrategiesforCloseReading,AdolescentLiteracy:TurningPromiseintoPractice,andElementsofLiterature,theliteraturetextbookreadbythemajorityofmiddleschoolandhighschoolstudentsacrosstheUS.Shebeganherteachingcareerin1979intheAliefSchoolDistrict,outsideofHouston.Texas.Sincethen,shehasbecomeaninternationally-knownandrespectedauthorityinliteracyeducation.Beersworkstirelesslytohelpparents,teachers,andnationalpolicymakersunderstandhowtobesthelpstrugglingreaders.In2008-2009,sheservedasPresidentoftheNationalCouncilofTeachersofEnglishandin2011shereceivedanNCTELeadershipAward.ShehasservedasaconsultanttotheNationalGovernor’sAssociationEducationCommittee,wastheeditorofthenationalliteracyjournalVoicesfromtheMiddle,taughtintheCollegeofEducationattheUniversityofHouston,heldareadingresearchpositionintheComerSchoolDevelopmentProgramatYaleUniversitySchoolofMedicine,andhasmostrecentlyservedastheSeniorReadingAdvisortotheReadingandWritingProjectatTeachersCollege,ColumbiaUniversity.RobertProbst,Ed.D.,isanauthorandconsultanttoschoolsnationallyandinternationally.Hespeakstoadministratorsandteachersonliteracyimprovement,particularlyissuessurroundingstrugglingreadersandmeetingstandards.BobisProfessorEmeritusofEnglishEducationatGeorgiaStateUniversityandhasservedasaresearchfellowforFloridaInternationalUniversity.HehasservedasamemberontheConferenceonEnglishBoardofDirectors,anNCTEjournalcolumnist,andamemberoftheNCTECommissiononReading.In2004hewasawardedtheNCTEExemplaryLeadershipAwardpresentedbytheConferenceonEnglishLeadership.
