Galen(ClaudiusGalenus,129–c.199CE)isthemostfamousphysicianoftheGreco-Romanworldwhosewritingshavesurvived.AGreekfromawealthyfamily,raisedandeducatedintheGreekcityofPergamon,heacquiredhismedicaleducationbytravellingwidelyintheRomanworld,visitingthefamousmedicalcentresandstudyingwithleadingdoctors.HiscareertookhimtoRome,wherehewasappointedbytheemperorMarcusAureliusashispersonalphysician;healsoservedsucceedingemperorsinthisrole.AhugecorpusofwritingsonmedicinewhichbearGalen'snamehassurvived.Thetaskofeditingandpublishingsuchacorpus,andofidentifyingtheauthenticGalenictextswithinit,isahugelychallengingone,andthe22-volumeeditionreissuedhere,editedbyKarlGottlobKühn(1754–1840)andpublishedinLeipzigbetween1821and1833,hasneveryetbeenequalled.
