MarkAllenWeissisProfessorandAssociateDirectorfortheSchoolofComputingandInformationSciencesatFloridaInternationalUniversity.HeisalsocurrentlyservingasbothDirectorofUndergraduateStudiesandDirectorofGraduateStudies.HereceivedhisBachelor’sDegreeinElectricalEngineeringfromtheCooperUnionin1983,andhisPh.D.inComputerSciencefromPrincetonUniversityin1987,workingunderBobSedgewick.HehasbeenatFIUsince1987andwaspromotedtoProfessorin1996.Hisinterestsincludedatastructures,algorithms,andeducation.Heismostwell-knownforhishighly-acclaimedDataStructurestextbooks,whichhavebeenusedforagenerationbyroughlyamillionstudents.ProfessorWeissistheauthorofnumerouspublicationsintop-ratedjournalsandwasrecipientoftheUniversity’sExcellenceinResearchAwardin1994.In1996atFIUhewasthefirstintheworldtoteachDataStructuresusingtheJavaprogramminglanguage,whichisnowthedefactostandard.From1997-2004heservedasamemberoftheAdvancedPlacementComputerScienceDevelopmentCommittee,chairingthecommitteefrom2000-2004.ThecommitteedesignedthecurriculumandwrotetheAPexamsthatweretakenby20,000highschoolstudentsannually.InadditiontohisResearchAwardin1994,ProfessorWeissisalsotherecipientoftheUniversity’sExcellenceinTeachingAwardin1999andtheSchoolofComputingandInformationScienceExcellenceinTeachingAward(2005)andExcellenceinServiceAward(2007).
