JEAN-JACQUESROUSSEAUwasborninGenevain1712.HisremarkablenovelLanouvelleHéloise(1761),metwithimmediateandenormoussuccess.InthisandinÉmile,whichfollowedayearlater,Rousseauinvokedtheinviolabilityofpersonalidealsagainstthepowerofthestateandthepressuresofsociety.ThecrowningachievementofhispoliticalphilosophywasTheSocialContract,publishedin1762.Thatsameyearhewroteanattackonrevealedreligion,theProfessiondefoiduvicairesavoyard.HewasdrivenfromSwitzerlandandfledtoEnglandwhereheonlysucceededinmakinganenemyofHumeandreturnedtohiscontinentalperegrinations.In1770RousseaucompletedhisConfessions.HislastyearswerespentlargelyinFrancewherehediedin1778.
