CharlesDickenswasbornon7February1812inLandportinPortsmouth.HisfatherwasaclerkintheNavyPayOfficewhooftenendedupinfinancialtrouble.WhenDickenswastwelveyears’oldhewassenttoworkinashoepolishfactorybecausehisfatherhadbeenimprisonedfordebt.In1833hebegantopublishshortstoriesandessaysinnewspapersandmagazines.ThePickwickPapers,hisfirstcommercialsuccess,waspublishedin1836,thesameyearthathemarriedCatherineHogarth.TheserialisationofOliverTwistbeganin1837whileThePickwickPaperswasstillrunning.ManyothernovelsfollowedandDickensbecameacelebrityinAmericaaswellasBritain.HealsosetupandeditedthejournalsHouseholdWords(1850–9)andAlltheYearRound(1859–70).CharlesDickensdiedon9June1870leavinghislastnovel,TheMysteryofEdwinDrood,unfinished.HeisburiedinWestminsterAbbey.
