FrancisWyndhamwasborninLondonin1924.HegraduatedfromEtonin1940andspentayearatOxfordbeforebeingdraftedintothearmyin1942.Whenitbecameclearthathewassufferingfromtuberculosis,hewasdismissedfromserviceandreturnedtoLondon,wherehebeganwritingreviewsforTheTimesLiterarySupplementandworkingontheshortstoriesthatwouldlaterbecollectedinOutoftheWar(notpublisheduntil1974).Duringthe1950sheworkedasacriticandeditoratQueenandin1964washiredbyTheSundayTimes,wherehestayeduntil1980.HecollaboratedwithDavidKingonTrotsky:ADocumentaryandistheauthorofacollectionofessays,TheTheatreofEmbarrassment;anovel,TheOtherGarden(winnerofthe1987WhitbreadFirstNovelAward);andco-editorofTheLettersofJeanRhys.AlanHollinghurstwasbornin1954inGloucestershire,England,andattendedMagdalenCollege,Oxford.HeistheauthorofthenovelsTheSwimming-PoolLibrary,TheFoldingStar(short-listedfortheBookerPrize),TheSpell,TheLineofBeauty(winnerofthe2004ManBookerPrize),aswellasofatranslationoftheplayBajazetbyRacine.AformerstaffmemberatTheTimesLiterarySupplement,Hollinghurstisafrequentcontributortothatandotherpublications,includingTheGuardian.HelivesinLondon.
