HenryJames(1843-1916),borninNewYorkCity,wasthesonofnotedreligiousphilosopherHenryJames,Sr.,andbrotherofeminentpsychologistandphilosopherWilliamJames.HespenthisearlylifeinAmericaandstudiedinGeneva,LondonandParisduringhisadolescencetogaintheworldlyexperiencesoprizedbyhisfather.HelivedinNewport,wentbrieflytoHarvardLawSchool,andin1864begantocontributebothcriticismandtalestomagazines.In1869,andthenin1872-74,hepaidvisitstoEuropeandbeganhisfirstnovel,RoderickHudson.Latein1875hesettledinParis,wherehemetTurgenev,Flaubert,andZola,andwroteTheAmerican(1877).InDecember1876hemovedtoLondon,wheretwoyearslaterheachievedinternationalfamewithDaisyMiller.OtherfamousworksincludeWashingtonSquare(1880),ThePortraitofaLady(1881),ThePrincessCasamassima(1886),TheAspernPapers(1888),TheTurnoftheScrew(1898),andthreelargenovelsofthenewcentury,TheWingsoftheDove(1902),TheAmbassadors(1903)andTheGoldenBowl(1904).In1905herevisitedtheUnitedStatesandwroteTheAmericanScene(1907).Duringhiscareerhealsowrotemanyworksofcriticismandtravel.Althougholdandailing,hethrewhimselfintowarworkin1914,andin1915,afewmonthsbeforehisdeath,hebecameaBritishsubject.In1916KingGeorgeVconferredtheOrderofMeritonhim.HediedinLondoninFebruary1916.
