RachelLouiseCarson(May27,1907–April14,1964)wasanAmericanmarinebiologistandconservationistwhosewritingsarecreditedwithadvancingtheglobalenvironmentalmovement.CarsonbeganhercareerasabiologistintheU.S.BureauofFisheries,andbecameafull-timenaturewriterinthe1950s.Herwidelypraised1951bestsellerTheSeaAroundUswonherfinancialsecurityandrecognitionasagiftedwriter.Hernextbook,TheEdgeoftheSea,andtherepublishedversionofherfirstbook,UndertheSeaWind,werealsobestsellers.Together,herseatrilogyexploresthewholeofoceanlife,fromtheshorestothesurfacetothedeepsea.Inthelate1950s,Carsonturnedherattentiontoconservationandtheenvironmentalproblemscausedbysyntheticpesticides.TheresultwasSilentSpring(1962),whichbroughtenvironmentalconcernstoanunprecedentedportionoftheAmericanpublic.SilentSpring,whilemetwithfiercedenialfromchemicalcompanies,spurredareversalinnationalpesticidepolicy—leadingtoanationwidebanonDDTandotherpesticides—andthegrassrootsenvironmentalmovementthebookinspiredledtothecreationoftheEnvironmentalProtectionAgency.CarsonwasposthumouslyawardedthePresidentialMedalofFreedombyJimmyCarter.美国女作家雷切尔卡森是生态文学史上里程碑式的人物。她以一系列将艺术与科学有机结合的作品表现了大自然的美丽神奇,揭示了重大的环境问题,掀起了世界范围的生态意识浪潮。
