THEfirsteditionofthisvolumeoftheCourseofTheoreticalPhysicswaspublishedintwoparts(1971and1974)underthetitle"RelativisticQuantumTheory".Itcontainednotonlythebasicmaterialonquantumelectrodynamicsbutalsochaptersonweakinteractionsandcertaintopicsinthetheoryofstronginteractions.Theinclusionofthosechaptersnowseemstousinopportune.Thetheoryofstrongandweakinteractionsisundergoingavigorousdevelopmentfoundedonnewphysicalideas，andthesituationinthisfieldischangingveryrapidly，sothatthetimeforaconsistentexpositionofthetheoryhasnotyetarrived.Inthepresentedition，therefore，wehaveretainedonlyquantumelectrodynamics，andaccordinglychangedthetitleofthevolume.
