DaphneDuMaurierwasborninLondononMay13,1907andeducatedinParis.In1932,shemarriedLieutenant-GeneralSirFrederickBrowning.Shebeganwritingshortstoriesofmysteryandsuspenseformagazinesin1928,acollectionofwhichappearedasTheAppleTreein1952.Herfirstnovel,TheLovingSpirit,waspublishedin1931.Hertightlywoven,highlysuspensefulplotsandherstrongcharactersmakeherstoriesperfectforadaptationtofilmortelevision.AmonghermanynovelsthatweremadeintosuccessfulfilmsareJamaicaInn(1936),Rebecca(1938),Frenchman'sCreek(1941),HungryHill(1943),MyCousinRachel(1952),andTheScapegoat(1957).HershortstoryTheBirds(1953)wasbroughttoscreenbydirectorAlfredHitchcockinatreatmentthathasbecomeaclassichorror-suspensefilm.ShediedonApril19,1989attheageof81.
