DanielDefoewasbornDanielFoeinLondonin1660.Itwasperhaps,ineveitablethatDefoe,anoutspokenman,wouldbecomeapoliticaljournalist.AsaPuritanhebelievedGodhadgivenhimamissiontoprintthetruth,thatis,toproselytizeonreligionandpolitics,andinfact,hebecameaprolificpamphleteersatirizingthehypocrisiesofbothChurchandState.DefoeadmiredWilliamIII,andhispoemTheTrue-BornEnglishman(1701)wonhimtheKing'sfriendship.Butanill-timedsatireonHighChurchextremists,TheShortestWaywiththeDissenters,publishedduringQueenAnne'sreign,resultedinhisbeingpilloriedandimprisonedforseditiouslibelin1703.Atfifty-nineDefoeturnedtofiction,completingTheLifeandStrangeSurprisingAdventuresofRobinsonCrusoe(1719),partlybasedonthesagaofAlexanderSelkirk,aScottishsailor;MollFlanders(1722);ColonelJack(1722);AJournalofthePlagueYears(1722);andRoxanaortheFortunateMistress(1724).
