ErichMariaRemarque,whowasborninGermany,wasdraftedintotheGermanarmyduringWorldWarI.Throughthehazardousyearsfollowingthewarheworkedatmanyoccupations:schoolteacher,small-towndramacritic,race-cardriver,editorofasportsmagazine.Hisfirstnovel,AllQuietontheWesternFront,waspublishedinGermanyin1928.Abrilliantsuccess,sellingmorethanamillioncopies,itwasthefirstofmanyliterarytriumphs.WhentheNaziscametopower,RemarqueleftGermanyforSwitzerland.Herejectedallattemptstopersuadehimtoreturn,andasaresulthelosthisGermancitizenship,hisbookswereburned,andhisfilmsbanned.HewenttotheUnitedStatesin1938andbecameacitizenin1947.HelaterlivedinSwitzerlandwithhissecondwife,theactressPauletteGoddard.HediedinSeptember1970.,,,
