Atanearlyage,JuanDíazCanalesbecameinterestedincomicsandtheircreation,whichprogressedandbroadenedouttoincludeanimatedfilms.Attheageof18,heenteredaschoolforanimation.In1996hefounded,togetherwiththreeotherartists,acompanycalledTridenteAnimation.Throughthis,hehasworkedwithEuropeanandAmericancompanies,providingplotsandscriptsforcomicsandanimationfilms,aswellasdirectinganimatedtelevisionseriesandanimationmovies.DuringthisperiodhemetJuanjoGuarnido,withwhomCanalesdecidedtocreatecomicsbasedaroundaprivateinvestigator,Blacksad.Aftercontactingseveraleditors,GuarnidoandCanalesfinallysignedonwithFrenchpublisherDargaud,andinNovember2000,SomewhereWithintheShadowswaspublished.Itwasagreatsuccesswithbothcriticsandthepublic,andwasawardedthePrixdelaDécouverteattheSierreInternationalComicsFestivalandthe"Avenir"PrizeattheLys-lez-LannoyFestival,inSwitzerlandandFrancerespectively.InMarch2003thesecondalbumArctic-Nation,wasreleased.Itwasonceagainagreatsuccess,winningtheAngoulêmeAudienceAwardandtheFestivalPrizeforArtworkin2004.ThethirdinstalmentoftheBlacksadseries,RedSoul,waspublishedin2005.In2006itwasawardedtheAngoulêmePrizeforaSeries.TheauthorlivesinMadrid,Spain.,,,
