Thefirsteditioflofthisbook(1986)grewoutofasetofnotesusedbytheauthorstoteachtwoone-semestercoursesonprobabilityandrandomprocessesatRensse-laerPolytechnicInstitute(RPI).AtthattimetheprobabilitycourseatRPIwasre-quiredofallstudentsintheComputerandSystemsEngineeringProgramandwasahighlyrecommendedelectiveforstudentsincloselyrelatedareas.Whilemanyun-dergraduatestudentstookthecourseinthejunioryear,manyseniorsandfirst-yeargraduatestudentstookthecourseforcreditaswell.Then,asnow,mostofthestu-dentswereengineeringstudents.Toservethesestudentswell,wefeltthatweshouldberigorousinintroducingfundamentalprincipleswhilefurnishingmanyop-portunitiesforstudentstodeveloptheirskillsatsolvingproblems.
