AftertherestorationofKingCharlesIItotheBritishthronein1660,dramatistsexperiencednewfreedominanagethatbrokefromthestrictmoralityofpuritanruleandinwhicheleganceandwitbecamethechiefvirtues.Irreverent,licentiousandcynical,thethreeplayscollectedhereholdupamirrortothisdazzlingeraandsatirizethegulfbetweenappearancesandreality.InEtherege's"TheManofMode"(1676),thewomanizingDorimantmeetshismatchwhenhefallsinlovewiththeunpretentiousHarriet,whileWycherley's"TheCountryWife"(c.1675)depictstherakishHornerwhofakesimpotencetofooltrustinghusbandsintogivinghimeasyaccesstotheirwives.AndinCongreve's"LoveforLove"(1695),theextravagantValentinecanonlywinhisbelovedAngelicaifheloseshisinheritance.

作者简介

GeorgeEtherege(1636-1689)inventedthecomedyofintrigue,andledthewayforthemasterpiecesofCongreveandSheridan.WilliamWycherley(1640?-1716)isfamousforhisbrilliantwitandsavagelycleversatirewhichgivehimaprominentplaceinthehistoryofEnglishRestorationdrama.WilliamCongreve(1670-1729)wasapprenticedunderthetutelageofJohnDryden.Congreve'switandhischaracters'sexualfreedomandexperimentationwereatoddswiththethinkingofcertainmoralistsoftheday.However,hehassincebeenconsideredoneofthemostintellectuallyaccomplishedofEnglishplaywrights.GaminiSalgadowasborninCeylon(nowSriLanka),andcametoEnglandin1947toattendtheUniversityofNottingham.HebecameanexpertonElizabethanandJacobeanliterature,andwasappointedtotheChairofEnglishatExeterUniversityin1977.Hediedin1985.
