作者简介

AleksandarTišma(1924–2003)wasbornintheVojvodina,aformerprovinceoftheAustro-HungarianEmpirethathadbeenincorporatedintothenewKingdomofYugoslaviaaftertheFirstWorldWar.Hisfather,aSerb,camefromapeasantbackground;hismotherwasmiddle-classandJewish.Thefamilylivedcomfortably,andTišmareceivedagoodeducation.In1941,HungaryannexedVojvodina;thenextyear—Tišma’slastinhighschool—theregimecarriedoutaseriesofmurderouspogroms,killingsome3,000inhabitants,primarilySerbsandJews,thoughtheTišmaswerespared.AfterfightingfortheYugoslavpartisans,TišmastudiedphilosophyatBelgradeUniversityandwentintojournalismandin1949joinedtheeditorialstaffofapublishinghouse,whereheremaineduntilhisretirementin1980.Tišmapublishedhisfirststory,“Ibika’sHouse,”in1951;itwasfollowedbythenovelsGuiltandInSearchoftheDarkGirlandacollectionofstories,Violence.Inthe1970sand’80s,hegainedinternationalrecognitionwiththepublicationofhisNoviSadtrilogy:TheBookofBlam(1971),aboutasurvivoroftheHungarianoccupationofNoviSad;TheUseofMan(1976),whichfollowsagroupoffriendsthroughtheSecondWorldWarandafter;andKapo(1987),thestoryofaJewraisedasaCatholicwhobecomesaguardinaGermanconcentrationcamp.TišmamovedtoFranceaftertheoutbreakofwarandcollapseofYugoslaviaintheearly1990s,butin1995hereturnedtoNoviSad,wherehespenthislastyears.BernardJohnson(1933–2003)wasaffiliatedwiththeLanguageCentreattheLondonSchoolofEconomicsformanyyears.In1970heeditedandtranslatedthefirstanthologyofmodernYugoslavliterature,andthroughouthiscareerhedistinguishedhimselfasoneofthemostactivetranslatorsofSerbo-CroatianpoetryandproseworkinginEnglish.ClaireMessudistheauthoroffournovelsandabookofnovellas.HernovelTheEmperor’sChildrenwaslong-listedfortheManBookerPrize,andwasselectedasoneofthetenbestbooksof2006byTheNewYorkTimes.HermostrecentnovelisTheWomanUpstairs.SheliveswithherfamilyinCambridge,Massachusetts.,,,,
