SusannaClarkewasborninNottinghamin1959.AnomadicchildhoodwasspentintownsinNorthernEnglandandScotland.ShewaseducatedatStHilda'sCollege,Oxford,andhasworkedinvariousareasofnon-fictionpublishing,includingGordonFraserandQuarto.In1990,sheleftLondonandwenttoTurintoteachEnglishtostressed-outexecutivesoftheFiatmotorcompany.ThefollowingyearshetaughtEnglishinBilbao.ShereturnedtoEnglandin1992andspenttherestofthatyearinCountyDurham,inahousethatlookedoutovertheNorthSea.Thereshebeganworkingonherfirstnovel,JonathanStrange&MrNorrell.From1993to2003,SusannaClarkewasaneditoratSimonandSchuster'sCambridgeoffice,wheresheworkedontheircookerylist.ShehaspublishedsevenshortstoriesandnovellasinUSanthologies.One,"TheDukeofWellingtonMisplacesHisHorse,"firstappearedinalimited-edition,illustratedchapbookfromGreenManPress.Another,"MrSimonelliorTheFairyWidower,"wasshortlistedforaWorldFantasyAwardin2001.ShelivesinCambridgewithherpartner,thenovelistandreviewerColinGreenland.
