F.R.Leaviswasbornin1895inCambridge,wherehewouldliveandteachformostoftherestofhislife.Hevolunteeredasastretcher-bearerintheFirstWorldWar,andwasbadlygassedontheWesternFront.AppointedDirectorofStudiesinEnglishatDowningCollege,Cambridge,in1930,heremainedthereforthenextthirtyyears,oftenatoddswiththeUniversityestablishment.In1932heandhiswifeQueenieRothfoundedthehugelyinfluentialjournalScrutiny,whichranuntil1953.Hewasoneofthemostimportantfiguresinthedevelopmentofmodernliterarycriticism,andintheelevationofEnglishasaseriousacademicsubject.Hediedin1978.
