SamuelButler(1835-1902)wasanauthor,literarycritic,philosopher,painterandtranslatorofHomer.Afteradisagreementabouthiscareerwithhisfather,aclergymanwhohadbeenpressuredintojoiningtheChurchbyhisownfather,ButlerleftEnglandtobecomeasheepfarmerinNewZealand.ThelettershewrotetohisfatherfromhereformedthebasisofhisutopiansatireErewhon.TheWayofAllFlesh,asemi-autobiographicalexplorationofVictorianfamilylifeandindictmentofVictorianhypocrisy,waspublishedposthumouslyin1903.
