RaymondCarverwasborninClatskanie,Oregon,in1938.HisfirstshortstoriesappearedinEsquireduringGordonLish'stenureasfictioneditorinthe1970s.Carver'sworkbegantoreachawideraudiencewiththe1976publicationofWillYouPleaseBeQuiet,Please,butitwasnotuntilthe1981publicationofWhatWeTalkAboutWhenWeTalkAboutLoveunderGordonLish,thenatKnopf,thathebegantoachieverealliteraryfame.Thiscollectionwaseditedbymorethan40percentbeforepublication,andCarverdedicatedittohisfellowwriterandfuturewife,TessGallagher,withthepromisethathewouldonedayrepublishhisstoriesatfulllength.Hewentontowritetwomorecollectionsofstories,CathedralandElephant,whichmovedawayfromtheearlierminimaliststyleintoanewexpansiveness,aswellasseveralcollectionsofpoetry.Hediedin1988,agedfifty.
