H.L.A.(Herbert)Hart(1907-1992)wasthesonofaJewishtailorofPolishandGermandescent.HewaseducatedatBradfordGrammarSchoolandNewCollegeOxford,whereheobtainedabrilliantfirstclassinClassicalGreats.HepractisedattheChanceryBarfrom1932to1940alongwithRichard(laterLord)Wilberforce.Duringthewar,beingunfitforactiveservice,heworkedinMI5.Duringthistimehisinterestsreturnedtophilosophyandin1945hewasappointedphilosophytutoratNewCollege.HewasstronglyinfluencedbythelinguisticphilosophythencurrentinOxford,butemployeditstechniquesmoreconstructivelythandidmostmembersofthemovement.In1952,givenhischancerybackground,hewaspersuadedbyJ.L.AustintobeacandidatefortheOxfordchairofJurisprudencewhenProfessorArthurGoodhartresigned.Hewaselectedandheldthechairuntil1969.From1952onhedeliveredtheundergraduatelecturesthatturnedintoTheConceptofLaw(1961,posthumoussecondedition1994).Healsolecturedonrightandduties,buttheselectureswereneverpublished.HeheldseminarswithTonyHonoréoncausation,leadingtotheirjointworkCausationintheLaw(1959,secondedition1985).HisvisittoHarvardin1956-7ledtohisHolmeslectureon'PositivismandtheSeparationofLawandMorals'(1958)andafamouscontroversywithLonFuller.ReturningtotheUKheengagedinanequallyfamousdebatewithPatrick(laterLord)Devlinonthelimitswithinwhichthecriminallawshouldtrytoenforcemorality.Hartpublishedtwobooksonthesubject,Law,LibertyandMorality(1963)andTheMoralityoftheCriminalLaw(1965).Awiderinterestincriminallaw,stimulatedbyRupert(laterProfessorSirRupert)Crosswassignalledbyhis'ProlegomenontothePrinciplesofPunishment'(1959).NineofhisessaysonthecriminallawwerecollectedinPunishmentandResponsibility(1968).In1968hewasaskedbyOxfordUniversitytochairacommissiononrelationswithjuniormembers,thenatalowebb,andproducedanotablyperceptiveandconstructivereport.FeelingthathispowerswerewaningHartresignedhischairin1969,tobesucceededbyRonaldDworkin,aseverecriticofhislegalphilosophy.HenowdevotedhimselfmainlytothestudyofBentham,whom,alongwithKelsen,heregardedasthemostimportantlegalphilosopherofmoderntimes.TenofhisessayswerecollectedinEssaysonBentham(1982).From1973to1978hewasPrincipalofBrasenoseCollege.InhislastyearshewasmuchconcernedtofindaconvincingreplytoDworkin'scriticismsofhisversionoflegalpositivism.AsketchofHart'sreplyistobefoundinthepostscripttothesecondeditionofTheConceptofLaw.Hart'smainaimasalecturerandwriterwastotellthetruthandbeclear.HewasthemostwidelyreadBritishlegalphilosopherofthetwentiethcenturyandhisworkwillcontinuetobeafocusofdiscussion.
