JonF.WerginisprofessorofeducationalstudiesatVirginiaCommonwealthUniversity(VCU)andaseniorscholarwiththeAmericanAssociationforHigherEducation.HereceivedhisPHDineducationalpsychologyin19734fromtheUniversityofNebraska,Lincoln,andhasbeenatVCUeversince,servinginbothadministrativeandfacultyroles.In1992hetookaleavefromVCUtobethefoundingdirectoroftheAmericanAssociationforHigherEducation's(AAHE)ForumonFacultyrolesandRewardsandhascontinuedanactiveassociationwithAAHEsincethen,focusinghisscholarshiponevaluationandchangeinacademicdepartments.HisMonograph,TheCollaborativeDepartment(1994),wasthefirstpublishedbyAAHEundertheauspicesoftheForum.AtVCU,WerginteachescoursesinadultandhighereducationandcoordinatesthePreparingFutureFacultyfortheProfessionsprogram(fundedbyFIPSE)thoughthegraduateschool.Hehaswonschool-wideawardsforbothteaching(1996)andscholarship(1998).HisotherbooksandmonographsincludeEducatingProfessionals(1993,withLynnCurry),whichwonthebestScholarlyPublicationawardfromDivisionIoftheAmericanEducationalResearchAssociation;AnalyzingFacultyWorkload(1994);AnalyzinganEvaluatingEducationalresearch(1996and2001,withJimMcMillan);andDepartmentalAssessment:HowSomeCampusesareEffectivelyEvaluatingtheCollectiveWorkofFaculty(2000,withJ.NSwingen),whichreportstheresultsofanationalsurveyof?departmentalassessmentpracticesforThePewCharitableTrusts.Hehasalsopublishednumerousjournalarticlesonsuchtopicsasprofessionaleducation,assessment,andtherestructuringoffacultywork.In2001-2002hedirectedanotherprojectfundedbythePewCharitableTrusts,integratingeffortstoassessstudentlearningbytheeightregionalaccreditingassociations.WerginispastdivisionalvicepresidentoftheAmericanEducationlResearchAssociation(DivisionIEducationintheProfessions),andhasservedaschiefevaluatoroftwonationalcentersforresearchinhighereducation.HeisadistinguishedvisitingprofessoratAntiochUniversity'sdoctoralprograminleadershipandorganizationalchangeandisamemberoftheNationalAcademyofHigherEducationLeadership.Hehasconsultedwithdozensofnationalassociations,accreditingbodies,andcollegesanduniversitiesonissuesrelatedtoevaluationandchangeinhighereducation.HelivesinRichmondwithhiswife,PaulaHorvatich,theirtwoteenagechildren,anda1940WurlizerJukebox.
