ChristopherPethickgraduatedwithaD.Phil.in1965fromtheUniversityofOxford,andhehadaresearchfellowshipthereuntil1970.Duringtheyears1966-69hewasapostdoctoralfellowattheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-Champaign,wherehejoinedthefacultyin1970,becomingProfessorofPhysicsin1973.FollowingperiodsspentattheLandauInstituteforTheoreticalPhysics,MoscowandatNordita(NordicInstituteforTheoreticalPhysics),Copenhagen,asavisitingscientist,heacceptedapermanentpositionatNorditain1975,anddividedhistimeformanyyearsbetweenNorditaandtheUniversityofIllinois.Apartfromthesubjectofthepresentbook,ProfessorPethick'smainresearchinterestsarecondensedmatterphysics(quantumliquids,especially3He,4Heandsuperconductors)andastrophysics(particularlythepropertiesofdensematterandtheinteriorsofneutronstars).Heisalsotheco-authorofLandauFermi-LiquidTheory:ConceptsandApplications(1991).HenrikSmithobtainedhismag.scient.degreein1966fromtheUniversityofCopenhagenandspentthenextfewyearsasapostdoctoralfellowatCornellUniversityandasavisitingscientistattheInstituteforTheoreticalPhysics,Helsinki.In1972hejoinedthefacultyoftheUniversityofCopenhagenwherehebecamedr.phil.in1977andProfessorofPhysicsin1978.HehasalsoworkedasaguestscientistattheBellLaboratories,NewJersey.ProfessorSmith'sresearchfieldiscondensedmatterphysicsandlow-temperaturephysicsincludingquantumliquidsandthepropertiesofsuperfluid3He,transportpropertiesofnormalandsuperconductingmetals,andtwo-dimensionalelectronsystems.HisotherbooksincludeTransportPhenomena(1989)andIntroductiontoQuantumMechanics(1991).
