W.H.Auden(1907-73)wasborninYork,England,andeducatedatOxford.Duringthe1930shewastheleaderofaleft-wingliterarygroupthatincludedChristopherIsherwoodandStephenSpender.WithIsherwoodhewrotethreeverseplays.HelivedinGermanyduringtheearlydaysofNazism,andwasastretcher-bearerfortheRepublicansduringtheSpanishCivilWar.Auden'sfirstvolumeofpoetryappearedin1930.LatervolumesincludeSpain(1937),NewYearLetter(1941),FortheTimeBeing,aChristmasOratorio(1945),TheAgeofAnxiety(1947;PulitzerPrize),Nones(1951),TheShieldofAchilles(1955),HomagetoClio(1960),AbouttheHouse(1965),EpistleofaGodson(1972),andThankYou,Fog(1974).Hisotherworksincludethelibretto,withhiscompanionChesterKallman,forStravinsky'soperaTheRake'sProgress(1953);ACertainWorld:ACommonplaceBook(1970);andTheDyer'sHandandOtherEssays(1968).In1939AudenmovedtotheUnitedStatesandbecameacitizenin1946,andbeginningthatyeartaughtatanumberofAmericancollegesanduniversities.From1956to1961hewasprofessorofpoetryatOxford.Subsequentlyhelivedinanumberofcountries,includingItalyandAustria,andin1971hereturnedtoEngland.HewasawardedtheNationalMedalforLiteraturein1967.
