Abstractobjectshavebeenacentraltopicinphilosophysinceantiquity.Philosophershavedefendedvariousviewsaboutabstractobjectsbyappealingtometaphysicalconsiderations,considerationsregardingmathematicsorscience,and,notinfrequently,intuitionsaboutnaturallanguage.Thisbookpursuesthequestionofhowandwhethernaturallanguageallowsforreferencetoabstractobjectsinafullysystematicway.Bymakingfulluseofcontemporarylinguisticsemantics,itpresentsamuchgreaterrangeoflinguisticgeneralizationsthanhaspreviouslybeentakenintoconsiderationinphilosophicaldiscussions,anditarguesforanontologicalpictureisverydifferentfromthatgenerallytakenforgrantedbyphilosophersandsemanticistsalike.Referencetoabstractobjectssuchasproperties,numbers,propositions,anddegreesisconsiderablymoremarginalthangenerallyheld.Instead,naturallanguageisrathergenerousinallowingreferencetoparticularizedproperties(tropes),theuseofnonreferentialexpressionsinapparentreferentialposition,andtheuseof"nominalizingexpressions,"suchasquantifierslike"something."Referencetoabstractobjectsisachievedgenerallyonlybytheuseof'reifyingterms',suchas"thenumbereight."
