JohnHowardGriffin(1920-1980)isknowninternationallyastheauthoroftwonovels,NuniandTheDevilRidesOutside,fivebooksandmonographsonracisminadditiontoBlackLikeMe,abiographyofThomasMerton,threecollectionsofphotography,avolumeofjournals,twohistoricalworksonTexas,amusicologicalstudy,andTheJohnHowardReader.BorninDallas,Texas,andeducatedinFrance,heservedintheU.S.AirForceintheSouthPacific,whereaninjuryhereceivedduringaJapanesebombardmenteventuallyresultedinthecompletelossofhissight.Inthe1950'sheconvertedtoCatholicism,married,andraisedafamily.In1957,(aftertenyearsofblindness)hemiraculouslyregainedhissight.
