Withthereleaseofthecensusfiguresin2000,LatinoAmericawasanointedthefuturedrivingforceofAmericanculture.TheemergenceofSpanglishasaformofcommunicationisoneofthemoreinfluentialmarkersofanAmericagoneLatino.Spanish,presentonthiscontinentsincethefifteenthcentury,whenIberianexplorerssoughttocolonizeterritoriesinwhatarenowFlorida,NewMexico,Texas,andCalifornia,hasbecomeubiquitousinthelastfewdecades.Thenation'sunofficialsecondlanguage,itishighlyvisibleonseveral24-hourTVnetworksandonmorethan200radiostationsacrossthecountry.ButSpanishnorthoftheRioGrandehasnotspreadinitspureIberianform.Onthecontrary,asignatureofthebrewing"LatinFever"thathasswepttheUnitedStatessincethemid-1980sistheastonishingcreativelinguisticamalgamoftonguesusedbypeopleofHispanicdescent,notonlyinmajorcitiesbutinruralareasaswell--neitherSpanishnorEnglish,butahybrid,knownonlyasSpanglish.
